India’s Digital Leap: Jio and Airtel Partner with Elon Musk’s Starlink to Boost Connectivity

In a groundbreaking move, India’s top telecom giants, Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel, have signed separate agreements with Elon Musk’s SpaceX to introduce Starlink satellite internet services across India. The announcement marks a surprising shift, especially given the recent tensions between Musk and the two telecom giants regarding spectrum allocation.
Expanding India’s Digital Reach
The agreements aim to significantly expand broadband coverage, especially in rural and remote regions where traditional internet infrastructure is lacking. However, the deals remain conditional, pending regulatory approval from the Indian government.
Under the partnership:
- Jio will offer Starlink equipment through its retail and online outlets, providing installation support for seamless adoption.
- Airtel is also exploring distribution and will integrate Starlink services with its existing satellite broadband offerings, including a prior deal with Eutelsat OneWeb.
The partnerships align with India’s push to bridge its digital divide, as over 670 million people still lack internet access, according to a 2024 GSMA report.
Navigating Policy and Competition
The partnerships come after India’s decision to administratively allocate satellite spectrum—a major win for Musk, who argued this approach aligns with global practices. This shift followed his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Washington, where space technology collaborations were discussed.
Previously, both Mukesh Ambani (Jio) and Sunil Bharti Mittal (Airtel) had opposed Musk’s stance, advocating for a competitive auction process instead. However, India’s policy shift paved the way for these surprising alliances.
What the Stakeholders Are Saying
- Mukesh Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Industries, remarked:
“Our partnership with Starlink is a strategic step towards ensuring every Indian, irrespective of their location, has access to high-quality internet. We’re committed to bridging the digital divide.”
- Sunil Bharti Mittal, Chairman of Bharti Enterprises, commented:
“This collaboration aligns with Airtel’s mission to drive digital inclusivity. Partnering with Starlink will enable us to reach even the most remote communities with reliable connectivity.”
- Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, stated:
“India represents a significant opportunity for Starlink to showcase how satellite internet can revolutionize global connectivity. We’re excited to work alongside Jio and Airtel to bring this vision to life.”
Pricing: The Key to Adoption
While Starlink’s satellite services typically cost around $150 per month, analysts suggest that partnerships with Jio and Airtel could reduce prices to around 3,000 rupees ($36). However, this is still significantly higher compared to India’s ultra-affordable mobile data rates, which average 150 rupees ($2) monthly.
“Pricing will be the deciding factor for mass adoption,” says Prasanto K Roy, a technology analyst. “A tie-up with both telcos could help balance pricing while ensuring high-quality service.”
A Strategic Shift in India’s Telecom Landscape
Experts view these partnerships as a strategic pivot for Jio and Airtel in response to policy changes that didn’t favor their initial positions.
“Jio was hoping to raise entry barriers with the auction route. But with the policy shift, a strategic partnership became the next best option,” Roy adds.
Meanwhile, the Indian government’s decision is seen as a pragmatic move amid ongoing US-India trade discussions and potential tariff tensions with the US.
What’s Next?
If approved, these partnerships could reshape India’s broadband landscape, providing reliable, high-speed internet access to millions. This would not only be a win for Starlink but also a monumental step in India’s digital evolution.
