What the Whole World Should Know: Canada’s Supreme Court Says “NO GENOCIDE IN SRI LANKA”

A major decision from the Supreme Court of Canada has brought clarity to a controversial issue that affects Sri Lanka’s image worldwide. On March 27, 2025, the court confirmed that there was no genocide in Sri Lanka, rejecting a law passed in Ontario called Bill 104 – Tamil Genocide Education Week Act.
This ruling is an important victory for truth, justice, and the dignity of our country.
What Was Bill 104 About?
Bill 104 aimed to officially declare a week in Ontario to “educate” people about what it called the “Tamil genocide” in Sri Lanka. However, the Canadian courts looked closely at this law and found that:
- It had no real educational purpose.
- It went beyond what a provincial government in Canada is allowed to do under its Constitution.
The Ontario Court of Appeal clearly said:
“We disagree with the characterization of the Act as ‘educative.’”
The Supreme Court of Canada refused to hear any more appeals, meaning the lower court’s ruling stands. This means there is no legal support for calling what happened in Sri Lanka a genocide.
This landmark ruling directly counters efforts to institutionalize the narrative of “genocide” in Sri Lanka—an allegation often promoted without legal or factual backing.
A Big Thank You to Dr. Neville Hewage and His Team
We, as Sri Lankans, extend our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Neville Hewage and his legal team, who argued against Bill 104 on behalf of all Sri Lankans. Their dedication and hard work made sure that false claims were stopped and the truth was protected.
They reminded the world that history should be based on facts, not on political agendas.
The Role of Dr. Neville Hewage & Legal Team: Sri Lanka congratulates Dr. Neville Hewage and his legal team, who tirelessly argued against Bill 104. Representing the interests of all Sri Lankans, their advocacy ensured that justice and truth prevailed, preventing the distortion of history for political or ideological gain.
Their efforts have restored integrity in the face of a relentless global campaign to vilify Sri Lanka.
Why Are These False Claims Being Made?
Since the end of the war in 2009, pro-LTTE terrorist groups and some members of the pro-LTTE Tamil diaspora have been trying to damage Sri Lanka’s image. They are angry that Sri Lanka defeated terrorism and stopped separatism.
So, instead of accepting peace, they continue to spread false accusations, like genocide, to seek revenge for the LTTE’s defeat. These groups try to pressure foreign governments to accept their version of history.
But the world should not forget: Sri Lanka fought a long and difficult war to protect its people from terrorism—not to target any community.
The Agenda Behind the Allegations
It must be highlighted that pro-LTTE terrorist groups and segments of the pro-LTTE Tamil diaspora have for years attempted to paint a negative image of Sri Lanka. Their objective has always been clear: to seek revenge for the defeat of the LTTE terrorist organization in 2009, and to continue promoting separatist ideologies under different guises.
Despite Sri Lanka’s hard-won peace and unity after three decades of conflict, these groups have tried to undermine national reconciliation by lobbying foreign governments and institutions to recognize a so-called “Tamil Genocide.” These attempts are not about human rights—they are about revenge, propaganda, and the long-standing desire to keep separatism alive.
A Message to the International Community
To world leaders, governments, and courts: this ruling is a reminder to stay neutral, respect facts, and not support terrorist-linked agendas. Supporting such false narratives only helps those who once promoted violence and division.
The decision by the Supreme Court of Canada is a strong example of justice and fairness—something all countries should follow.
This decision is not just a win for Sri Lanka—it’s a win for the truth.
Let this be a moment to stand together as one nation and protect our history from being twisted by those who do not want peace. Let’s thank and support those, like Dr. Neville Hewage, who fight for the truth and defend Sri Lanka’s name.
