Elon Musk is likely to arrive in Sri Lanka next month to launch his Starlink satellite-based internet service in the country, an official said yesterday.

The government had earlier given Starlink, the satellite unit of SpaceX, preliminary approval to provide internet services in Sri Lanka. Following this, the government fast-tracked the process by amending the Telecommunications Regulatory Act for the first time in 28 years.

Director General of the Sri Lanka Telecommunications Regulatory Authority, Madushanka Dissanayake, mentioned that the basic template for licensing the operation of Starlink is currently being drafted. He noted that the new rules and regulations for this purpose would align with the amended Act.

“We have given time until the end of July to complete the task. However, we are confident that we can complete the task well ahead of time,” he said.

When asked about the timeline for Musk’s arrival, he indicated that the visit would take place in August. Following the launch, it is expected to take an additional three weeks to operationalize the service.

“They need this amount of time to lay the infrastructure for operation by installing equipment and other necessary components,” he explained. Starlink will be granted a service providers’ license under the new Act.
