Tech magnate Elon Musk has foreseen a future where artificial intelligence eliminates the necessity for human labour, which he discussed with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in an unusual “in conversation” event at this week’s AI summit. In their 50-minute conversation, Musk predicted that technology would render paid employment obsolete and cautioned about the emergence of humanoid robots capable of relentless pursuit. They also explored London’s status as a leading hub for the AI industry and the transformative potential of technology in education. However, the conversation delved into darker topics as Sunak acknowledged the concerns people have about job displacement, leading to an agreement on the necessity for a “referee” to oversee future supercomputers.

Elon Musk, a prominent tech investor and inventor, has invested in AI companies and integrated AI technology into his autonomous Tesla vehicles, while simultaneously expressing concerns about its potential societal and existential threats. During the discussion, Musk highlighted safety concerns, especially regarding humanoid robots, and Sunak humorously remarked, “You’re not selling this.”

The event was a rare instance of a country’s prime minister interviewing a prominent businessman like Musk. The event took place in a grand hall at London’s Lancaster House, with TV cameras excluded, and the footage released by Downing Street. While some reporters were permitted to observe, they were not allowed to ask questions. The conversation covered the positive aspects of AI, with Musk suggesting that AI could serve as a friend for individuals who struggle to make friends. They also agreed on the educational potential of AI, with Musk suggesting it could be the best and most patient tutor. However, the discussion also included a sobering warning about the potential disruptive impact of AI on traditional jobs, with Musk foreseeing a future where AI can handle virtually all tasks, leading to questions about how individuals will find meaning in life.

Despite the philosophical discussions, there were limited new announcements regarding AI’s implementation and regulation in the UK, apart from Sunak’s promise to enhance the government’s website using AI. Musk was one of the prominent figures at the summit, and his criticism of the event on his social media platform, X (formerly Twitter), added a touch of controversy. Nevertheless, during the event, Sunak and Musk appeared comfortable together, with Sunak appearing particularly captivated by the controversial billionaire, whom he described as a “brilliant innovator and technologist.”

From the perspective of onlookers, it was challenging to discern which of the two held more power in the conversation, as Sunak posed questions to the tech billionaire while Musk dominated the discussion. Nonetheless, both men aim to influence the course of our AI-driven future.
